Renewable energy in the European Union

Green energy ceases to be just an alternative, becoming the foundation of a modern energy system that replaces fossil fuels. Solutions based on sun, wind, water, geothermal and biomass are gaining popularity due to measurable environmental and economic benefits. In this entry we will explain why renewable energy sources in the European Union are given priority and how energy transformation affects Polish companies and society.

Renewable energy sources - what exactly does that mean?

Many people who know the concept renewable energy sources For the first time, I ask myself what This exactly means and what resources fit into this group. In the simplest sense, it is energy derived from natural repetitive natural processes. Unlike raw materials such as coal or oil, their resources do not run out with exploitation. Electricity production naturally reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which is the most effective weapon in the fight against global warming.

  • Environmental protection - Renewable energy is virtually free from greenhouse gas emissions, which are the main contributors to global warming and climate change. The transition to green energy, also called energy transformation, reduces human environmental impacts.
  • Infinite Resource - The sun, wind, water - are renewable energy sources that will never run out. Using them gives certainty that energy will be available for many generations to come.
  • Less dependence on fossil fuels - Traditional energy sources, such as coal, oil or gas, are limited and subject to price changes on world markets. They are also leverage in political disputes. With renewable energy, countries and companies can reduce their dependence on these uncertain resources.

What are renewable energy sources in Poland?

Solar energy, using solar panels to transform solar radiation into electricity and wind energy, generated by windmills, is now the most widespread and accessible source of green energy, a key to protecting the environment and creating a sustainable future. However, there are more sources of green energy.

  • Solar - Solar panels transform solar radiation into electricity. This is one of the most accessible and widespread ways of producing green energy.
  • Wind - Wind turbines produce electricity using wind energy. They are particularly effective in areas with high wind exposure.
  • Water - Water power plants use the potential of rivers and lakes to generate electricity. It is a stable and reliable source of renewable energy.
  • Geothermal energy - Energy extracted from the interior of Earth, for example in the form of hot springs, is used to produce heat and electricity.
  • Biomass energy - Use organic materials, such as plant residues or waste, to produce electricity or heat.

Benefits of renewable energy sources in Poland

The transition to green energy brings numerous benefits for both companies and society. For companies, this means the ability to build a sustainable image, which affects the positive perception of the company as being involved in protecting the environment and contributing to sustainable development. In addition, investment in green energy brings long-term financial benefits.

  • A company that builds or complements the green supply chain - for many environmental companies, suppliers today are a condition for winning intrepid contracts.

  • Sustainable image of the company - The transition to green energy, or energy transformation, contributes to the positive image of the company as involved in environmental protection and sustainable development.

  • Reduction of energy costs - long-term investments in green energy can reduce electricity bills in companies, which translates into savings and greater competitiveness. With renewable energy, you lower the price of energy used in the company.

  • Creating new jobs - The development of the green energy sector contributes to creating new jobs, supporting economic growth.

  • Improving air quality - Less use of fossil fuels means less air pollution.

Green energy is a key element in combating the climate crisis and building a sustainable future. Renewable energy sources bring huge benefits to the environment and the economy, as well as allowing companies to play an active role in the fight for a better and cleaner world. Investments in green energy have a positive impact on current and future generations, creating stable foundations for our planet. By developing towards a green future, we can achieve a real change for the better.

Green energy in Poland

The Polish renewable energy market has been developing very rapidly in recent years. In 2022 alone, production from photovoltaics increased by 4TWh (+102% y/y) and energy production from wind by 3 TWh (+19% y/y)*.

Despite this, achieving the climate neutrality of our country is still a distant prospect. In 2022 carbon dioxide emissions in Poland increased by 0.3% compared to 2021.

The topic of renewable sources also appears in the context of the ESG (factors, based on which ratings and non-financial evaluations of companies, countries and other organisations are created. ESG reports to help customers (e.g. market participants, investors or customers) compare companies in non-financial aspects such as the environment, social responsibility and corporate governance.

There is not enough green energy in Poland. The development of renewable energy production prevents, among other things, too slow development of energy networks. Therefore, when planning an energy transformation, it is worth examining in advance what are the possibilities and ensuring that renewable energy can be used. The solution is, for example, contracts that allow to order green energy directly from the manufacturer - so-called cPPA contracts.

PPAs way to green change in your company

Corporate Power Purchase Agreement is a two-way electricity supply contract. It is usually concluded between the renewable energy producer and the buyer most often the company. The contract defines the price, quantity and all conditions for the sale of energy, and it is characterized by the fact that it is concluded for a long period - usually it is up to 10 - 20 years. Apart from energy supply alone, PPAs can also finance the construction and operating costs of energy sources.

The cPPA agreement is therefore a long-term agreement concluded directly between the producer of green energy and its recipient. This is a very stable form of green energy supply with a guarantee of electricity origin.
