What does ESG reporting have to do with RES? Meet the PPAs

Is there enough renewable energy for everyone involved? We have doubts... Why? As early as January 2024, the ESG has been required to report to selected companies, so it becomes important for them to use their electricity sources. But that is not the only reason. Green energy is increasingly important for the suppliers and entities they cooperate with. Big companies expect to show that their suppliers are reducing using green electricity. Demand for renewable energy is increasing, and RES is still not enough in Poland! Few people know that today is a safe place for future years! How? More in the article

ESG reporting - what is it?

The ESG is abbreviated by factors based on which ratings and non-financial evaluations of companies, countries and other organisations are created. ESG reports are intended to help customers (e.g. market participants, investors or customers) compare companies in non-financial aspects, such as:

  • E - environmental , i.e. the environment, is an assessment of the criteria that relate to the implementation of the environmental strategy and policy, to compliance with the principles of environmental responsibility and care, and to environmental management, an aspect on which emphasis is placed, and is therefore crucial for the overall analysis of the ESG. A large passage is devoted to the carbon footprint and the use of electricity by companies.
  • S - social responsibility , i.e. social responsibility - in this case, account is taken of factors such as relations with market shareholders - customers, suppliers, partners, as well as working conditions, compliance with labour rights and health and safety principles. This aspect also concerns quality policy in the context of product management and quality procedures, and the company's information policy and transparency are also assessed, so that it is fairly informed about the sources of electricity consumed.
  • G - corporate governance , i.e. corporate governance, here the management and corporate governance criteria are assessed, and in particular factors such as the structure of the company's management, decision-making independence, respect for shareholder rights, including information obligations for all shareholders or management skills.

The subject of the ESG reporting is important for energy-intensive companies. It limits the possibility of operating certificates of origin for electricity without the actual purchase of green energy. Business strategies in Europe and Poland must include actions on purchases, to a large extent or even exclusively, green energy. This is defined by the SDG. All of this will affect the attractiveness of RES energy.

Mandatory reporting of the ESG in a few months

From 2024, ESG will be required to report on listed companies with over 500 employees. In 2025 o non-financial aspects they will have to inform all large companies, and as of 1 January 2026 (reporting in 2027) - medium and small companies that are listed on the stock exchange.

Given the great pressure to show the sources of electricity, reporting to the ESC will stimulate the development of green transformation and RES. It will also become a reason for the efforts of companies to acquire green energy.

The obligation to report to the ESC sooner or later will apply to every Polish company, so it is worth taking an interest in it now.

First of all, it should be remembered that cultivation is a process. Energy directly from RES cannot be contracted overnight. She's not enough.

In the next 5 years, in Poland, green energy is not enough for all interested customers. In Poland we now consume about 175 TWh. According to CSO data, about 31.6 TWh are per household. The rest are companies, institutions, local governments. The annual demand of Polish companies for electricity is about 60 TWh. Available RES power after the installation for which the connection conditions have been issued will provide about 50 TWh of energy if built. Today this value is about 20 TWh. Anticipatory companies are already signing for 2024 and further years. The shortage of sources is huge - says Zbigniew Kinal, CEO of OZEOS.

Therefore, it is now - in the first half of 2023 it is best to contract energy for next year. The best way is to find a reliable partner to ensure the maximum share of green energy, with a guaranteed price for years. OZEOS is a very accurate source choice based on energy consumption profiles, creating optimal energy mixes.
